Saffron – the spice so expensive it’s called ‘red gold’ – has brought jobs and money to a region better known for coal mines and unemployment.

Most are young people who were shut out of the job market during Greece’s economic downturn. They returned to the countryside to make a living off the land The Guardian writes.

Sometimes you want to take a break and look around. It’s beautiful.

Even kids are interested.

After harvesting the flowers manually they pick the most valuable ones.

Then saffron is dried and weighted.

It is usually dried in cooperatives. And then packed into separate packages for sale.
