Honeysuckle is a berry that has no prospects at all in the market. Those who say otherwise, usually, are simply interested to sell saplings. This opinion was expressed in an interview by Taras Bashtannik, the head of the “Ukrainian Berry” company.
Now the company has 5 hectares of honeysuckle. But if they knew, they wouldn’t have planted it at all, says the farmer. Honeysuckle has nowhere to sell not only in Ukraine but also in the world.
“Having tried to work with this berry, I understand that it will not bring profit in five or ten years,” Bashtannik adds.
In his opinion, the buyer simply did not appreciate the berry, because it is rather unusual in taste. There is no established culture of its consumption.
Those who planted it simply went for the trend. So it was, for example, with black currant, when people began to massively buy it. Then the price subsided, and the berry producers would not return to this crop for at least the next 5 years.
Bashtannik also says that the company tried to sell honeysuckle through a large supermarket chain. During the season, it sells 30 tons of blueberries a week. But they could not sell even 300 kg of honeysuckle. People simply do not buy it.
By the way, there is no official statistics on the production of honeysuckle in Ukraine. According to marketing research, the area under the crop is estimated at about 120 hectares. At the same time, about half of commercial production is concentrated in the hands of three farms.
