The profitability of sorghum production in Ukraine may be at least 200%, the Agro Times reports, citing the opinion of Yaroslav Bardin, the general director of Scientific and Production Company “Ukrsorgo”.
This crop is easy to keep in any growing conditions, he explains. Poor and saline soils are suitable for it, by the way, sorghum is drought-resistant. Therefore, low cost per 1 ha with a sufficiently high yield of 10-15 t/ha can give high profitability.
Only in 1 hectare of sorghum, you need to invest at most $400, and the cost of one ton of the crop will be $25-40. From the field, sorghum is bought at least for $100/t. So, its marginality is 200%.
As we wrote earlier, this season Ukrainian agrarians expect a record yield of sorghum. It can reach 10-12 t/ha.
In the steppe zone of the Kherson region, despite the lack of rain during the growing season and small reserves of productive moisture in a meter-thick layer of soil, the sorghum harvest from the area of more than 250 hectares was 34 centner/ha. Such an indicator allowed for a quite high profitability of production.
