A group of people’s deputies recently submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a bill that offers enrichment of flour with vitamins, minerals and trace elements. The corresponding document is registered under the number 9117 and has already been presented to the Committee for Agrarian Policy and Land Relations.
In particular, it is about the flour fortification with folic acid, a synthetic analog of natural vitamin B9. It is also often enriched with iron, iodine, vitamin A and the like.
The initiators of the bill believe that the enrichment of flour with additional substances will become a preventive method aimed at improving the health of the nation. In addition, this method is recommended by the Ministry of Health.
Now, flour in more than 80 countries is enriched with folic acid. Among these countries are the USA, Canada, Chile, Hungary, Great Britain, France. The substance is added at the rate of 220 μg per 100 g of flour. And in China, for example, they fortify rice as a product of mass consumption.
All other micronutrients are added depending on the situation in a particular country. In some places, food products are enriched with zinc, vitamin A, D, B12, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and other elements.
In Ukraine, they propose to fortify wheat flour of the highest and first grade. The procedure will be introduced in stages: from 2020 it will be established in enterprises with a processing capacity of 150 tons of grain per day; in half a year, it will be introduced to those with a capacity of 50-150 tons/day; from 2021 the plants with a capacity of up to 50 tons/day will use this method.
