The volume of imports of exotic fruits to Ukraine exceeded the consumption of dessert apples. According to official statistics, last year Ukraine imported about 600 thousand tons of exotic fruits, while Ukrainians consumed about 450-500 thousand tons of dessert apples, “Info-Shuvar” informs.
According to the report, the growth of imports of exotic fruits to Ukraine has been taking place for the third year in a row. Experts say that this is due to the fact that the national currency has become more stable, and Ukrainians have started to travel more and their taste preferences, respectively, have somewhat changed. In this case, the consumption of dessert apples over the years almost does not change, and in the last season even decreased. First of all, because of record high prices for them.
The favorite exotic fruit of Ukrainians is banana. Its share in the total volume of consumption of exotic fruits is 40% and among other traditional imported fruits, its volume is growing most rapidly, by 60% over the past three years.
According to Tatyana Getman, head of the Analytical Department of the “Shuvar”, today the market of bananas in Ukraine has already reached half of the market for dessert apples and is 250 thousand tons.
The next most popular among Ukrainians is grapefruit. Last year over 17 thousand tons of it was imported to Ukraine. In comparison with the previous year, this is 26% more.
Consumption of mandarins in Ukraine also increased over the past three years by 20% and amounts to 140 thousand tons. These fruits are in second place in terms of imports.
In addition, the volume of imports of lemons is also increasing. Over the past three years, it has grown to 46 thousand tons, that is, 15%. Oranges are an outsider in terms of growth rates of imports. Over the past three years, their volume has grown only by 5% and is 70 thousand tons.
According to experts, if the Ukrainian hryvnia remains more or less stable, the import of exotic fruits will continue to grow, although dessert apples will not lag behind this year, because prices will be quite affordable.
Earlier it was reported that because of the high supply of dessert apples and quite low prices for other seasonal fruits, prices for most varieties of dessert apples in Ukraine were twice lower than last year.
