The yield of potatoes in Ukraine this year will be higher than in the past, despite 10-15% reduction in areas under this crop. Such expectations are shared in the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers.
Market operators say a significant increase in yields is observed for professional potato growers as well, as in the households. The professional potato growers name the figures of 45-50 t/ha, while last year there were 40 tons.
“The reason is the favorable weather and climate conditions in the middle of summer, which corrected the situation with the late sowing campaign and the absence of rain at the stage of sprouting”, explains Oksana Ruzhenkova, executive director of the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers.
She notes that in the Zhytomyr and Chernihiv region the farmers are getting less, 25-30 t/ha. Locally there was no rain for a long time.
But, for example, “Agro LV Limited” (Lviv region) have harvested a record 63 t / ha of table potatoes from a 300-hectare field without watering it. Here, in demo sections, the indicators also reached 100 tons/ha.
The Association says that the pace of harvesting potatoes is different in every farm. Someone has just started to dig out potatoes and processed 10% of the area. There are those who have already harvested a large half of the crop.
For now, small batches of problem quality potato are sold from the field at 2.5-2.7 UAH/kg. Maximum — 3,7 UAH. Quality potatoes cost 3.5-4.8 UAH/kg, individually the selling price reaches 6 UAH/kg.
It is expected that more potatoes will be put in storage than last year. Problems of European potato growers this year have not touched Ukraine.
Earlier, Nikolay Gordiychuk, the director of the Agrico Ukraine breeding company, suggested that taking advantage of the shortage of harvest in Europe, Ukraine could gain access to the markets of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and North Africa.
